How to play No Thanks

A tight 20-minute game for 3–7 players. Cards are worth points against you — unless you can string them into consecutive runs. Refuse a card by paying a token; take it (and any tokens paid on it) to keep the deck moving.

Setup

The deck has cards numbered 3 through 35. Nine are dealt away face-down and never seen. Each player receives 11 tokens (9 with six players, 7 with seven). The top card is flipped face-up.

On your turn

  1. Pass: place one of your tokens onto the current card. The next player faces the same card, now with more tokens on it.
  2. Take: pick up the card and all tokens on it. Then flip the next card and decide again — you keep the turn.
  3. If you have zero tokens, you cannot pass — you must take.

Scoring

At the end, sort your cards. Any run of consecutive numbers scores only the lowest card in it. Add up all your runs, then subtract one point per remaining token. Lowest score wins.

Example: cards 5, 6, 7, 20, 21 and 4 tokens → runs 5 and 20 → 25 − 4 = 21.

Winning

The game ends the moment the last card is taken. The player with the lowest total wins.
